CHAPTER 11
Dorran was in love with my mother? This has to be some mistake. I mean, he was only like fifteen years old at the time of her working here. At least, I assume so. They’re the same age as me, so it had to have been then, right before she got too sick to travel.
“This isn’t another one of your games, is it?” I wouldn’t put it past him. Brett is the time to invent something off the top of his head just to get a rise out of me. However, the more I look at him, the more I see that he could be telling the truth. His face is an emotionless mask, but it’s his eyes that speak of his honesty.
Dorran really was in love with my mother. And if that’s the case, do I really want to be in the same room as him? Yes, they’ve all been with my mother in that way. But if you really look at it, Dorran’s case is far more complex than the others. He was legit in love with my mother, and that only begs the question of why he would want me when the only person he wants is her.
Am I just a fill in for her? Whenever he looks at me is at her face he sees?
Brett gives me a hard look. “I come in here to tell you you’re moving, and you think I’m playing a game with you?”
“What else could it be?” He doesn’t really expect me to believe that he’s not playing some sort of game, like he’s not getting his jollies off at my expense. Every other girl here at RPA may be naïve, but I’m not one of them. The only thing different between the guys here in California and the guys in New Jersey, is the fact they have money. They have power. Anything they say goes, no matter who it is they are dealing with.
“I’ll tell you what,” he says, holding his hands in front of his face as if in prayer. “You can either go live with Dorran, or you can stay here in this room. How does that sound?”
Sounds like pure hell either way I go, but I don’t say that. Instead, I ask, “What’s the catch?”
“No catch.” His dead eyes meet mine. “I just don’t want you anywhere near me anymore.”
Hm, I wonder what changed. When silence resounds between us, I take a cautious step back when he starts messing with the door to my cage. Once it swings outward, my gaze flicks between the door firmly within his grasp and freedom. He even steps to the side, presumably to allow me to walk past him.
Curious. That’s what I am. And curiosity killed the goddamn cat, so I need to keep my eyes and ears peeled for anything. Brett may be civil now, but that can change in an instant. I’ve seen the things he can do; been at the brunt of his anger one too many times.
